How to Get Cleaner Edges When Removing a Background
A practical guide to foreground selection, edge feathering, difficult subjects and checking transparent image or video results.
Background removal is a mask, not a color deletion
A useful background remover estimates which pixels belong to the foreground and which belong to the background. Removing only pixels similar to one clicked color works for a clean studio backdrop, but it fails when the subject contains that color or the background has shadows and texture.
Subject segmentation instead creates a mask. White areas of the mask keep the subject, black areas remove the background and gray edge pixels create partial transparency. Good results depend on the subject, lighting and how well the mask follows fine boundaries.
Choose the right mode
Use AI subject mode for a person, product or object that is visually distinct from its surroundings. Use foreground-point mode when the automatic result misses a disconnected part of the subject. Add points inside the subject, not on the boundary. Use chroma key only when the source was photographed against a deliberately uniform color such as green or blue.
No single mode wins on every image. A product on white can be easier for local foreground selection than a general AI model. Hair against a busy room may be easier for a person model than for color-based selection. Preview both when the first result is uncertain.
Sensitivity, cleanup and feather have separate jobs
Sensitivity changes how readily the selection expands or how strongly the mask separates subject from background. Cleanup can remove isolated fragments that the first pass leaves behind. Feather softens the transition at the boundary so the cutout does not look like it was trimmed with scissors.
Too much sensitivity can absorb background areas. Too much cleanup can remove thin subject details. Too much feather creates a halo. Make small changes and inspect the same difficult area after each adjustment.
Hair, glass and motion blur are genuinely difficult
Fine hair contains gaps smaller than a normal preview can show. Glass and translucent fabric mix foreground and background colors. Motion blur spreads one object across several pixels. These are not simply bad settings; they are ambiguous image information.
Use the highest-quality source available. Strong separation between subject and background helps. For an important commercial image, use the browser result as a first cut and finish the mask in an editor with manual brush controls.
Test transparency before download
A cutout can look correct on a checkerboard and show a bright halo on a dark design. Preview it against white, black and a color close to the intended final background. Zoom around the entire boundary, including gaps between arms, product handles and loose hair.
For images, export PNG when transparency is required. JPEG cannot preserve transparent pixels. Transparent video has narrower format support, so test the WebM result in the destination before relying on it for a project.
- Place foreground points well inside every disconnected subject area.
- Use the smallest feather that removes a visibly harsh boundary.
- Check both light and dark preview backgrounds.
- Keep the source file for later manual correction.
