About this tool
What this tool does
This counter reports writing statistics as you type. It is intended for drafts, essays, scripts and publishing checks where several measurements need to stay visible together.
How the result is produced
- Words are counted from non-empty groups separated by whitespace.
- Characters use browser grapheme segmentation when available, which treats many emoji and combined characters more naturally than counting code units.
- Paragraphs are separated by blank lines; lines are separated by line breaks.
- Reading time uses 200 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute, both rounded up to a whole minute.
Good uses
- Checking an essay or article against a word target
- Estimating the length of a voice-over or presentation
- Comparing character totals with and without spaces
How to verify the result
- Scan abbreviations and decimal numbers if sentence count is important.
- Compare the paragraph count with the blank-line structure in your source.
- Treat reading and speaking time as planning estimates, not exact durations.
Known limitations
- Sentence detection is punctuation-based, so abbreviations and unusual prose can affect the total.
- Languages that do not normally separate words with spaces may need a language-specific counter.
- The tool does not assess grammar, originality or writing quality.
